HISTORY OF THE JEROME GRAND HOTEL: Perched above downtown Jerome high upon Cleopatra Hill is another haunted hotel – the Jerome Grand Hotel. Originally, this building served as the United Verde Hospital, opened in 1927. Constructed by the United Verde Copper Company for its many employees and their families, the hospital was a much needed facility in a town that had grown to a population of some 15,000 people. A show-place building, it was the highest structure in the Verde Valley and was the last major building constructed in Jerome. Built to last, the structure was of a fire- proof design and could withstand the many nearby mining blasts of up to 260,000 pounds. While other area buildings crumbled or slid down steep slopes caused by the mine blasting that sometimes could be felt as far away as Camp Verde, the 30,000 square foot hospital wasn’t fazed. The building was an engineering marvel, even by today’s standards, as it was constructed on a 50 degree slope. By 1930, the five-story Spanish Mission style building and its facilities were written up as one of the most modern and well equipped hospitals in Arizona. But, like the Copper Company itself, the hospital couldn't survive once the copper deposits played out. The town’s people moved on to other opportunities and the hospital closed in 1950. For the next 44 years it stood abandoned; however, until 1971, it continued to be maintained, just in case it was needed in an emergency situation. Then, for the next two decades, it sat silent and neglected. But, in 1994, the building was purchased by the Altherr family from the Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation and the restoration to its current glory as the Jerome Grand Hotel began. All effort was given to maintaining the interior and exterior integrity of the historic building and in 1996 it reopened as the Jerome Grand Hotel.

the investigation
The first investigation indicated that most of the activity seemed to come from what we so affectionately call "the burn room" which is located directly above "the asylum room". The reason for the name is that upon first entering the room, which was being renovated at the time, we noticed an odor similar to that of burnt wood from some of the building material. The name stuck. Since the activity was heavy here the last time, we decided to focus most of the investigation in there. After arriving late in the afternoon/early evening, we set up base camp in the room right next to the "burn room" and began setting up all IR cameras, audio and T.Az.P.R.S. energy emitting devices.

We had DVR IR cameras as well as audio set up in different areas of the "burn room" and were monitoring all cameras from base camp. Sub groups were formed and groups took turns investigating the burn room. Hand held video was recorded and EVP sessions were plenty. Many audio recorders were used as well as DVR footage recorded.

Many digital still pictures were taken, but unfortunately there wasn't anything of paranormal significance captured in any of them.

In this DVR footage recorded in the "burn room", we see a framed picture sitting on the floor and a paint can in the foreground. What happens is that the picture slides from left to right then back again. The paint can moves as well but at different times only forward and back.

the original united verde hospital

history
The original United Verde Hospital was built in 1017. The building is located just down the road, the last building you come to before arriving at The "Jerome Grand Hotel". It served as the hospital until the new United Verde Hospital building was built and opened in 1927 which is The "Jerome Grand Hotel" today.
We had the rare opportunity to hold our first T.Az.P.S. 2008 Ghost conference there and the turn out was great. The attendees were a wonderful group of paranormal enthusiasts who had received a rare glimpse into the historical past of this stout building. Very few people are allowed into this building and we will be forever grateful to the owners for this rare opportunity.

In the old United Verde Hospital built in 1917, Frank Madrid talks about various subjects, including sleep paralysis, with T.Az.P.R.S. 2008 conference guests.

The experience was fantastic! The owners and staff wonderful! We shall always remember this paranormal experience in our hearts. With the EVP and video evidence obtained from the first and second investigation, it is confirmed that The Jerome Grand Hotel is truly one of THE most haunted hotels in the state of Arizona thus far. I cannot express enough of the immense gratitude we have to the Altherr's for this extraordinarily rare opportunity they have bestowed upon us. If you desire an absolutely wonderful experience in a beautiful historic hotel, I strongly suggest staying at the haunted "Jerome Grand Hotel". You'll be happy you did!
